A common or unlearned person understands a story at its literal, direct level. However, if a story uses symbolism and the reader fails to recognize those symbols, there is a risk they will mistake the characters and events for absolute realities and misunderstand them. This risk exists even in Puranic literature, which is primarily intended for ordinary people.A prime example is the Rasa Lila episode of Sri Krishna and the Gopis from the Srimad Bhagavata Purana. To those who comprehend it only at a literal level, the entire episode appears to be vulgar erotica. Despite numerous cues provided in the original text, it remains difficult for an ordinary reader to grasp the core, spiritual meaning. This is why commentaries (interpretations) are essential. Without them, there are many opportunities for people to criticize the episodes in Puranas and Itihasas by looking at them solely through the lens of modern social standards.
